Route Summary
This stage combines multiple sections of the Jurassic Coast Path into a long and physically demanding day. Leaving Sidmouth, the route climbs quickly onto high ground before continuing along a series of steep, undulating cliff paths. The walk passes through Branscombe and Beer, with repeated descents into coastal valleys followed by steep climbs back onto the cliffs. After Beer, the terrain becomes slightly more varied with some less exposed sections, before continuing towards Lyme Regis. The final approach descends into the town, finishing near the harbour.
Elevation & Difficulty
With approximately 890 metres of ascent over a long distance, this is a very demanding stage. The difficulty comes from a combination of sustained elevation gain and repeated steep climbs, particularly between Sidmouth and Beer. Even though some later sections are less intense, the cumulative effort makes this one of the hardest single-day options on the route. This stage is significantly more demanding than any individual section when walked separately.
Highlights Along the Route
- Sidmouth Cliffs – Immediate ascent with views back over the town.
- Cliff-top Walking – Continuous elevated sections along a rugged coastline.
- Branscombe Village – Traditional village set in a deep valley.
- Beer Village and Cove – Distinctive fishing village with a sheltered beach.
- Lyme Regis Harbour (The Cobb) – Historic harbour marking the end of the stage.
Practical Information
- Parking (Sidmouth): Several car parks near the seafront and town centre.
- Parking (Lyme Regis): Multiple car parks, often busy in peak periods.
- Public Transport: Bus services connect Sidmouth, Branscombe, Beer and Lyme Regis, allowing options to shorten the stage if needed.
- Toilets: Available in Sidmouth, Branscombe, Beer and Lyme Regis.
- Food & Drink: Good options at all main settlements along the route.
- Water: No consistent refill points between villages — carry sufficient water.
Navigation Notes
The route is signposted throughout as part of the South West Coast Path. Navigation is generally straightforward, but the terrain requires attention, particularly on steep sections and where paths descend into valleys and rejoin the main route. There are no major diversions under normal conditions.
Safety Notes
This stage includes exposed cliff paths, steep ascents and descents, and uneven ground throughout. Extra care is required in wet or windy conditions. The length and elevation gain make fatigue a significant factor, particularly in warm weather. This stage should only be attempted with a good level of fitness and preparation.
Suggested Walking Strategy
This is best approached as a full-day walk and should only be attempted by those comfortable with long distances and sustained climbing. An early start is essential. For most walkers, splitting this into two stages (Sidmouth → Beer and Beer → Lyme Regis) will provide a more manageable and enjoyable experience. However, for a faster itinerary, this combined stage is achievable with careful pacing.
