Route Summary
This stage combines multiple sections into a long and physically demanding walk along one of the most varied parts of the Jurassic Coast. Leaving Lyme Regis, the route climbs quickly onto steep cliff paths before continuing through a series of ascents and descents towards Golden Cap. After passing the highest point on the south coast, the terrain gradually becomes less rugged, with longer and more open sections. The final part of the stage approaches Chesil Beach, finishing at West Bexington along flatter coastal terrain.
Elevation & Difficulty
With approximately 796 metres of ascent over a long distance, this is a very demanding stage. The initial sections include repeated steep climbs, particularly around Golden Cap, which contribute significantly to the overall effort. Although the terrain becomes less intense later in the stage, the cumulative elevation gain and distance make this a challenging full-day walk. This stage is comparable in difficulty to Sidmouth → Lyme Regis and requires a good level of fitness.
Highlights Along the Route
- Lyme Regis Harbour (The Cobb) – Historic starting point.
- Cliff-top Walking – Continuous elevated sections with wide coastal views.
- Golden Cap – Highest point on the south coast at 191 metres.
- Rugged Coastline – Dramatic and varied terrain through the middle section.
- Chesil Beach – Long shingle barrier marking the final section.
Practical Information
- Parking (Lyme Regis): Multiple car parks available, often busy.

- Public Transport: Bus services connect Lyme Regis with nearby towns; options near West Bexington are limited.
- Toilets: Available in Lyme Regis; very limited facilities at West Bexington.
- Food & Drink: Good options in Lyme Regis; very limited options at West Bexington.

Navigation Notes
The route is signposted throughout as part of the South West Coast Path. Navigation is generally straightforward, though attention is required on steep and undulating sections where paths may narrow or split. As the route approaches Chesil Beach, it becomes more straightforward with clearer, wider paths.
Safety Notes
This stage includes steep climbs, exposed cliff edges, and uneven ground. Extra care is required in wet or windy conditions. The sustained elevation gain and distance make fatigue a significant factor. The more exposed sections offer limited shelter, particularly in poor weather.
Suggested Walking Strategy
This is best approached as a full-day walk and should only be attempted by those comfortable with long distances and sustained climbing. An early start is essential. For most walkers, splitting this into two stages (Lyme Regis → Seatown and Seatown → Abbotsbury) will provide a more manageable experience. However, for a faster itinerary, this combined stage is achievable with careful pacing.
