Route Summary
This stage combines the opening sections of the Jurassic Coast Path into a longer and more demanding walk. Starting in Exmouth, the route follows the River Exe estuary before climbing onto the cliffs at Orcombe Point. From here, the path continues east along a series of undulating coastal sections, with repeated climbs and descents. The terrain is varied but consistently exposed, with open views along the coastline. The final approach descends into Sidmouth, finishing along the seafront.
Elevation & Difficulty
With approximately 463 metres of ascent over a longer distance, this is a demanding stage that requires sustained effort. The difficulty is spread across the route, with multiple climbs rather than a single steep ascent. While each individual section is manageable, the cumulative elevation gain and distance make this significantly more challenging than the shorter opening stages when walked separately.
Highlights Along the Route
- Exmouth Estuary – Wide views across the River Exe at the start.
- Orcombe Point – Official western gateway to the Jurassic Coast.
- Red Sandstone Cliffs – Distinctive geology along this section of coastline.
- Coastal Views – Continuous open views along the Devon coast.
- Sidmouth Seafront – Regency town with promenade and beach.
Practical Information
- Parking (Exmouth): Multiple car parks and on-street options near the seafront and town centre.
- Parking (Sidmouth): Several car parks near the seafront and in the town centre.
- Public Transport: Regular bus services connect Exmouth and Sidmouth, making this suitable for a one-way walk.
- Toilets: Available in Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, and Sidmouth.
- Food & Drink: Wide choice in Exmouth and Sidmouth; limited options in Budleigh Salterton en route.
- Water: Limited refill points between towns — carry sufficient water.
Navigation Notes
The route is signposted as part of the South West Coast Path. Navigation is generally straightforward, though care is needed when leaving Exmouth to stay on the coast path. The route remains clear throughout, with no significant diversions under normal conditions.
Safety Notes
This stage includes exposed cliff paths, uneven ground, and sustained elevation changes. Care is required near cliff edges, particularly in wet or windy conditions. The length and cumulative ascent make fatigue a factor, especially in warm weather.
Suggested Walking Strategy
This is best approached as a full-day walk due to the distance and elevation gain. An early start is recommended. For many walkers, splitting this into two shorter stages (Exmouth → Budleigh Salterton and Budleigh Salterton → Sidmouth) will provide a more manageable experience. However, for those looking for a longer first day, this combined stage is achievable with good pacing.
