Route Summary

This stage is one of the most physically demanding sections of the Jurassic Coast Path, following a series of steep climbs and descents along exposed cliffs. Leaving Sidmouth, the route climbs quickly onto high ground before continuing along a narrow coastal path with repeated elevation changes. The walk passes through Branscombe, one of the longest villages in England, before continuing over further undulating terrain towards Beer. The final section descends into the village, finishing near the sheltered cove.

Elevation & Difficulty

With approximately 570 metres of ascent, this is a significantly more demanding stage than earlier sections. The difficulty comes from repeated steep climbs rather than a single sustained ascent. These climbs are often short but sharp, requiring sustained effort throughout the walk. Despite the moderate distance, the elevation gain makes this one of the more tiring stages and a noticeable step up in difficulty.

Highlights Along the Route

  • Sidmouth Cliffs – Immediate ascent onto high ground with views back over the town.
  • Cliff-top Walking – Elevated sections with wide coastal views.
  • Branscombe Village – Traditional village set in a deep valley, with historic buildings and a beach.
  • Coastal Valleys – Repeated descents into and climbs out of steep-sided valleys.
  • Beer Village and Cove – Distinctive fishing village with a sheltered pebble beach.

Navigation Notes

The route is signposted throughout as part of the South West Coast Path. Navigation is generally straightforward, but the terrain requires attention, particularly on steeper sections where multiple minor paths may appear. Care is needed when descending into and climbing out of valleys, where path lines can split or rejoin.

Safety Notes

This stage includes exposed cliff paths, steep ascents and descents, and uneven ground. Extra care is required in wet or windy conditions, when paths may become slippery. The repeated climbs can be physically demanding, particularly in warm weather. There are no tide-dependent sections, but the route should be approached with a reasonable level of fitness.

Suggested Walking Strategy

This is best approached as a full-day walk due to the sustained effort required. An early start is advisable, particularly in warmer conditions. The stage can be broken at Branscombe for a rest or shorter walk option. Walking west to east (Sidmouth to Beer) allows for a logical progression along the coast and works well with transport options.
