Route Summary

This stage leaves Lulworth Cove and climbs immediately onto high ground, passing Durdle Door before continuing along one of the most rugged and exposed sections of the Jurassic Coast. The route follows a narrow, undulating coastal path with sustained ascents and descents and very little flat ground. Much of this stage crosses the Lulworth Ranges, a military training area with restricted public access. The final section descends towards Kimmeridge Bay, finishing near the shoreline.

Elevation & Difficulty

With approximately 480 metres of ascent over a relatively short distance, this is a consistently demanding stage. The difficulty comes from continuous steep climbs and descents rather than a single ascent. The initial climb out of Lulworth Cove sets the tone, followed by repeated elevation changes throughout. This stage, together with Osmington Mills → Lulworth Cove, forms one of the most physically demanding sections of the route.

Highlights Along the Route

  • Lulworth Cove – Distinctive circular bay at the start of the stage.
  • Durdle Door – Natural limestone arch and one of the most recognised landmarks on the coast.
  • Cliff-top Walking – Continuous elevated sections with wide coastal views.
  • Rugged Terrain – Sustained undulating landscape with dramatic elevation changes.
  • Kimmeridge Bay – Quiet coastal finish with views across the bay.

  • Range Access (Important):
This stage crosses the Lulworth Ranges, a military training area that is not open to the public every day. Access is typically permitted on most weekends, public holidays, and selected additional dates, but closures do occur. You must check the official access timetable before walking.

Navigation Notes

The route is signposted as part of the South West Coast Path and is generally straightforward to follow. However, this stage crosses a restricted military area. If the ranges are closed, the route is not accessible as described and there is no simple coastal alternative. Always confirm access in advance and follow all on-site signage.

Safety Notes

This stage includes steep climbs, exposed cliff edges, and uneven ground throughout. Extra care is required in wet or windy conditions.

  • Military Range Safety: Do not enter the range area if red flags or red lights are displayed. Remain on marked paths at all times and do not touch any unidentified objects.

The sustained physical effort and exposure make this a demanding stage that should not be underestimated.

Suggested Walking Strategy

This is best approached as a full-day walk due to the sustained effort required. It should only be planned on a day when the Lulworth Range walks are open. An early start is advisable, particularly in warm weather. There are limited opportunities to shorten the stage once underway, so preparation is important.
