Route Summary
This opening stage of the Jurassic Coast Path runs east from Exmouth, beginning alongside the River Exe estuary before climbing onto the cliffs at Orcombe Point. From here, the route follows a well-defined coastal path with steady undulation rather than sustained climbs. The terrain is generally straightforward, with clear paths and open views along the coastline. The final section descends gradually towards Budleigh Salterton, finishing at the long pebble beach.
Elevation & Difficulty
Although relatively short, this stage includes a noticeable climb early on when leaving Exmouth. After reaching the cliffs, the route becomes more consistent, with moderate rises and falls rather than steep ascents. With approximately 180 metres of ascent, it is a manageable introduction to the Jurassic Coast, particularly when compared to later stages where elevation gain is significantly higher.
Highlights Along the Route
- Exmouth Seafront and Estuary – Wide views across the River Exe at the start of the walk.
- Orcombe Point – Marked by the Geoneedle, this is the official western gateway to the Jurassic Coast.
- Red Sandstone Cliffs – Distinctive geology that defines this section of coastline.
- Coastal Views – Open views east towards Budleigh Salterton and beyond.
- Budleigh Salterton Beach – A long pebble beach backed by low cliffs and a promenade.

Navigation Notes
The route is clearly marked throughout as part of the South West Coast Path. The only point requiring attention is when leaving Exmouth, where several paths intersect near the edge of town — follow coast path signage rather than inland routes. Beyond this, navigation is straightforward with no significant diversions under normal conditions.
Safety Notes
The path follows exposed cliff sections in places, with uneven surfaces and occasional loose ground. Care is required near cliff edges, particularly in wet or windy conditions. The route can become muddy after rain. There are no tide-dependent sections on this stage.
Suggested Walking Strategy
This is a suitable half-day walk and works well as an introduction to the Jurassic Coast Path. Walking from Exmouth to Budleigh Salterton allows the main climb to be completed early. For convenience, many walkers choose to park in Budleigh Salterton and take a bus or taxi to Exmouth, then walk back.
