Durlston Country Park

Durlston Country Park is a coastal nature reserve located on the eastern edge of Swanage on the Isle of Purbeck, forming part of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. It covers an area of limestone downland and cliffs and is known for its coastal views, wildlife habitats and historical features. The park sits within a designated National Nature Reserve.

The landscape includes open grassland, walking paths and high cliffs overlooking the sea. Key features include Durlston Castle, a 19th-century stone building that now functions as a visitor centre, and the Great Globe, a large carved stone sphere positioned on the clifftop. The coastline here is characterised by rocky ledges and steep drops, with clear views towards Anvil Point lighthouse and along the Purbeck coastline.

Access to the park is by road from Swanage, with a main car park located near Durlston Castle. Parking charges apply, with additional charges for entry to the park area. Facilities include a visitor centre, café, toilets and information displays. Footpaths are well marked, though some areas near the cliffs require care. Entry on foot from Swanage is also possible via public footpaths.

The park is open throughout the year, with spring and summer offering the most favourable conditions for walking and wildlife observation. It is suitable for a range of visitors, including families and casual walkers, though some paths are uneven and exposed to the elements. The clifftop setting means weather conditions can change quickly, and caution is needed near edges.

Nearby locations include Swanage town centre, which provides beaches, shops and accommodation. Anvil Point and its lighthouse are within walking distance along the coast path. Studland lies to the north, offering sandy beaches and heathland. The South West Coast Path runs through the park, connecting it to surrounding coastal areas.
