Best Time to Walk

Overview

The Jurassic Coast Path can be walked year-round, but conditions vary significantly depending on the season. Weather, daylight hours, path conditions and access restrictions all influence the experience. For most walkers, late spring to early autumn provides the most reliable conditions.

A key planning factor is access through the Lulworth Ranges, which is restricted at certain times of year and must be checked in advance.

Spring (April – June)

Spring is one of the best periods to walk the route. Daylight hours increase steadily, temperatures are generally mild, and the landscape is at its most varied following winter.

Path conditions can still be wet or muddy, particularly in April, and exposed sections may feel cold in strong winds. However, the route is relatively quiet compared to summer, and accommodation is easier to arrange.

Late May and June offer some of the most balanced conditions of the year, combining longer days, moderate temperatures and more stable weather.

Summer (July – August)

Summer provides the longest daylight hours and the most consistent weather, making it the easiest time to complete longer stages and follow multi-day itineraries.

This is also the busiest period. Popular locations such as Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and Swanage can become crowded, particularly during school holidays. Accommodation is often more expensive and may require advance booking.

Warm conditions can make the more demanding stages more difficult, particularly those with sustained climbs and little shade.

Autumn (September – October)

Early autumn offers favourable walking conditions, with milder temperatures and fewer visitors. September is particularly well suited to walking the route, with good daylight and relatively stable weather.

By October, conditions become more variable and daylight hours reduce, though the route remains accessible. This period provides a quieter alternative to summer while still offering generally manageable conditions.

Winter (November – March)

Walking in winter is possible but more challenging. Daylight hours are limited, and weather conditions are more unpredictable, with stronger winds and increased rainfall.

Paths can become muddy and slippery, particularly on steep sections. Exposure to wind is more significant along open coastal stretches, and some facilities and accommodation may be closed or operating on reduced hours.

Lulworth Ranges Access (Important)

The section between Lulworth Cove and Kimmeridge crosses the Lulworth Ranges, a military training area with restricted public access. This is one of the most important planning considerations when walking the route.

Standard Access

  • Open most weekends
  • Typically accessible from Friday afternoon (around 4:30pm) to Monday morning (8:00am)
  • Also open on public holidays and selected extended periods

Access depends on range clearance and weather and is not guaranteed.

Weekend Closures (2026)

The ranges are closed on the following weekends:

  • 17–18 January
  • 14–15 March
  • 13–14 June
  • 12–13 September
  • 10–11 October
  • 14–15 November

Extended Opening Periods (2026)

The ranges are open daily during:

  • 20 Dec 2025 – 4 Jan 2026
  • 28 March – 12 April 2026
  • 2 – 4 May 2026
  • 23 – 31 May 2026
  • 25 July – 31 August 2026
  • 19 Dec 2026 – 3 Jan 2027

Access Notes

  • Gates open when safe following military use
  • Tyneham village is accessible from 9:00am to dusk on open days
  • Buildings are open 10:00am – 4:00pm
  • Do not enter if warning signals are displayed

Planning Implications

  • This section cannot be walked when the ranges are closed
  • There is no direct coastal alternative
  • Itineraries may need adjustment if access is not available
  • Always check access shortly before your walk

Key Considerations

Weather and Exposure

The route is largely exposed, with limited shelter. Wind is often a more significant factor than rain, particularly on cliff sections.

Daylight Hours

Longer days between May and August allow flexibility. In winter, shorter daylight hours limit how far you can walk.

Path Conditions

After rainfall, paths can become muddy and slippery, especially on steep terrain. This is more common in winter and early spring.

Crowds and Accommodation

Summer is busiest, particularly at well-known landmarks. Spring and autumn offer quieter conditions and more flexibility.

Best Overall Time to Walk

The most reliable periods are:

  • May to June – best overall balance of weather, daylight and quieter conditions
  • September – good conditions with fewer crowds

July and August provide the most predictable weather but are the busiest months.

Summary

  • Best conditions: May–June, September
  • Easiest logistics: July–August
  • Quietest periods: April, October
  • Most challenging: November–March
  • Critical restriction: Lulworth Ranges access must be checked in advance
